The Business Show Stand Builders: ExCeL Logistics, the SME Crowd, and What Wins Leads
The Business Show is one of Europe's largest events for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs, held each November at ExCeL London and drawing upwards of 25,000 visitors. Its exhibitors sell the products and services growing businesses need — software, finance, marketing, franchises, telecoms, business services — to an enormous, fast-moving crowd of owners and founders.
The brief here is footfall plus capture: with so many visitors moving quickly, the stand has to stop the right ones, communicate what you do in seconds, and capture their details cleanly, because most of these are quick decisions or considered follow-ups rather than deals closed on the day. Volume is the opportunity, and a stand designed to convert it is what turns a busy two days into a real pipeline.
It's an approachable, energetic audience, so the stand has to be welcoming and instantly clear rather than corporate and cautious.
For a business-services or software brand that means a stand built for volume: stop the right owners out of a huge crowd, say what you do in a heartbeat, and capture them before they move on. The exhibitors who win here treat the stand as a lead machine, not a showpiece.
Building at ExCeL London: the rules that shape your stand
ExCeL is a pillar-free hall with around 10m of clear internal height, but your stand does not get all of it. For space-only stands the working height limit at most ExCeL shows is 6m, and anything ExCeL classes as a complex structure — double-deckers, heavy suspended elements, long unsupported spans — triggers a formal sign-off you need to budget time for, not just money.
Complex designs must be submitted with engineering calculations applying a minimum factor of safety of 1.5. An independent structural engineer reviews the drawings and, if satisfied, issues a Certificate of Structural Adequacy at design stage, which releases your Certificate to Build; the same engineer inspects the stand on site during build-up before you can open. Miss a calculation or submit late and you do not build.
Overhead rigging is controlled tightly: all primary rigging to the ceiling is installed exclusively by ExCeL's own team, ordered through ExCeL's webshop and confirmed around 28 days before tenancy for the advance rate. Lightweight static items hang from drop wires up to 50kg; heavier loads are separate, costlier orders.
The smaller rules catch people out too: platforms above 170mm need ramped, accessible access; solid walls along an open gangway edge are generally not allowed; only water-based paint may be used on site; and every structure must be fully self-supporting. We design to all of this from the first sketch and submit the venue paperwork, so the build you approve is the build that opens.
What a winning Business Show stand needs
With a huge, fast-moving crowd, the stand has to do two things brilliantly: stop the right people and capture them efficiently. We design a bold, instantly readable proposition — a passer-by should know what you offer and why it matters in a few seconds — an open, approachable frontage that invites people in, and a quick, natural lead-capture flow so a good conversation doesn't end without the details to follow up.
Because volume is the whole point, we design the stand so your team can engage several visitors at once without a bottleneck, and so the busy front doesn't swamp any space you need for a longer conversation with a serious prospect.
Designing for footfall and fast decisions
Visitors here graze a vast floor, so clarity and approachability beat subtlety. We give the offer a strong, plain headline, an eye-catching but uncluttered look, and an obvious reason to stop — a demo, a giveaway, a quick assessment — that doubles as a natural way to capture a lead. For services chosen after the show, we make the takeaway and the captured enquiry easy, because the follow-up is where much of the business lands.
An open, friendly layout matters more than at a corporate show: small-business owners are looking for approachable suppliers, and a stand that feels welcoming gets far more of them onto it.
Staffing matters as much as design at this footfall: we lay the stand out so your team can work the aisle and the stand at once, because a brilliant stand with too few people simply lets qualified visitors walk past.
A simple, repeatable hook also helps a small team stay sharp: when the reason to stop is clear and easy to deliver, your people can run it cleanly to the hundredth visitor as well as the first.
What a Business Show stand costs
A turnkey stand typically runs roughly £3,950–£12,500 for a compact custom build, £12,500–£28,000 for a mid-size build with demo and meeting space, and £28,000 and up for a flagship island. The quote is turnkey — design, build, graphics, lighting, delivery to ExCeL, install, dismantle and the venue paperwork are all included — and the look, any demo and lead-capture fit-out move the number most.
For a high-footfall show, the spend that pays back is in a clear, inviting stand and clean lead capture that converts the crowd, not in scale for its own sake.
What you don't pay extra for is in the turnkey figure — material handling, electrical, rigging — so your budget goes on the look and lead capture that convert a big crowd, not on surprises.
Stand sizes and layouts
Stands run from compact spaces for solo founders and newer suppliers up to large builds for established business-service brands. The layout balances an eye-catching, open frontage with enough room for your team to engage a steady stream of visitors, plus a spot for the occasional longer conversation. Open and corner positions help you catch the crowd from multiple aisles.
Across a busy two days, a stand that lets several conversations and lead captures run in parallel is what turns high footfall into a high lead count.
And across two high-footfall days, the stands that win aren't the biggest but the ones that capture the most good leads per hour, so we design for throughput as much as for looks.
Getting into ExCeL: build-up timing
The Business Show sits in a busy November slot at ExCeL, so material-handling, rigging and the electrical contractor book up early and late orders attract surcharges. We confirm your space-only window, book rigging at the advance rate (around 28 days out), coordinate power for any demos with the appointed contractor, and crate to a slot that lands the stand finished and ready before the doors open to the crowd.
Reusing your stand between editions
The Business Show runs every year (with more than one edition), so a modular, reusable stand is sound economics. We store the core, refresh the graphics and offer for each edition, and keep your layout and contractor orders on file — so you arrive each time with a current, lead-ready stand rather than a rebuild, and can scale as your business grows.
We also keep the offer and graphics current between editions, because a fast-moving SME audience responds to what's relevant now, and a refresh is far cheaper than a rebuild.
Next step for your The Business Show stand
Send us your space size, hall position and goals for The Business Show. You'll get a custom 3D concept and a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — designed to ExCeL's rules, with structural sign-off built into the timeline if your design needs it. We build in-house and install at ExCeL London, so the stand you approve in the rendering is the stand that opens.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for events, meetings & business and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
