Spring Fair Stand Builders: NEC Logistics, Four-Day Stamina, and What Sells to Buyers
Spring Fair is the UK's largest wholesale trade show for home, gift and fashion, held each February at the NEC Birmingham. It welcomes more than 38,000 buyers to trade with around 1,500 exhibitors across four days, and it is where independents, multiples and online retailers set their buying for the year.
That makes the brief unambiguous: merchandise a lot of product clearly, and make it easy to write an order. A Spring Fair stand has to present a broad range without looking cluttered, give buyers room to browse and decide, and stand up to four full trading days — which is a different test from a two-day show.
For exhibitors that means designing for volume and stamina at once: a stand that displays a broad range without looking cluttered, makes ordering frictionless, and still looks sharp when buyers arrive on day four. A two-day show forgives a tired-looking stand; a four-day wholesale show does not.
Building at NEC Birmingham: the rules that shape your stand
The NEC is the UK's largest exhibition venue — big, flat, pillar-free halls with generous height — which is what makes it suited to large stands and double-deckers. Space-only stands typically build to 6m, and anything the NEC classes as a complex structure (double-deck, raised platforms over a certain height, heavy suspended elements) needs structural drawings and calculations approved ahead of the show.
The NEC publishes a detailed technical e-Guide and operates appointed contractors for rigging and electrics: rigging is ordered through the venue's official rigging supplier by the published deadline, and power is ordered from the appointed electrical contractor. Order late and you pay on-site surcharges during the busiest build days. We file these the day a design is signed off.
Accessibility and fire rules apply as everywhere: raised floors need ramped edges, materials must be fire-retardant to the venue standard, and finishes are completed off-site because in-hall fabrication is limited. The NEC's scale also makes logistics the variable that decides your build week — marshalling-yard timing and hall access windows are tight in peak season, so we crate and schedule to land your stand inside its slot.
What a winning Spring Fair stand needs
Home, gift and fashion exhibitors show a lot of SKUs, so the stands that work present a big range cleanly rather than cramming it in. We design flexible shelving, hanging and display walls that let buyers take in the collection at a glance, a clear order-writing desk, and stock and storage built in so you can replenish without breaking the shop front. Strong, simple range signage does more here than a big logo.
Pricing and range signage do a lot of the selling here. Wholesale buyers move fast and compare hard, so we make ranges, price points and order information easy to read from the aisle, and design the display so related products sit together the way a buyer wants to order them — not the way the warehouse happens to store them.
Four trading days change the brief
Four days, not two, is the detail most first-time Spring Fair exhibitors underestimate. The stand sees heavy handling, the team works a rota, and tired-looking displays cost orders in the back half of the show. We build robustly, secure fittings and graphics, specify surfaces that stay presentable, and design the layout so a smaller team can still cover the stand and write orders through to the final afternoon.
Staffing is part of the design brief, not an afterthought. A four-day show runs on a rota, and there will be quieter spells where one or two people cover the stand, so we lay it out so a small team can still greet buyers, reach stock and write orders without leaving the front unattended.
What a Spring Fair stand costs
A turnkey Spring Fair stand typically runs roughly £3,950–£12,500 for an enhanced shell scheme or compact custom build, £12,500–£28,000 for a mid-size custom build with bespoke merchandising and a meeting area, and £28,000 and up for a flagship build. Where you land depends on size, the amount of product display and how much bespoke joinery you add.
The figure is turnkey: design, merchandising fixtures, graphics, lighting, delivery to the NEC, install, dismantle and the venue paperwork are all included. What moves it is the square metreage, the volume and type of product display, the amount of stock storage built in and any bespoke joinery or raised structure.
Stand sizes, destinations and layouts
Spring Fair groups exhibitors into product destinations, and stand sizes run from compact shell schemes up to large custom builds for established brands. For most exhibitors the layout is a merchandising question: open frontage to pull browsing buyers, clear sightlines down the range, and an order desk positioned so it doesn't block the flow. We size and lay out the stand around your range and your hall position.
Order-writing flow is the layout decision that most affects sales. We position the order desk so it is easy to reach but doesn't dam the aisle, keep a clear route from the range a buyer is looking at to the place they commit to it, and make sure samples and collateral are within arm's reach of where the conversation happens.
Getting into the NEC: build-up timing
The NEC is the UK's largest venue and runs to a tight marshalling-yard and hall-access schedule, especially in the busy February window. We confirm your build-up slot, order rigging and power from the NEC's appointed contractors before the deadlines (late orders attract surcharges), and crate to a schedule that lands your stand inside its access window rather than queuing in the yard.
Standing out inside a product destination
Spring Fair groups exhibitors into themed destinations, so you are seen next to direct competitors and the job is to stand out within that block, not just in the hall. We use frontage, a brand block at height and a distinctive but on-brand material palette to pull buyers in, and where your position allows it we design for corner or island exposure so the range is visible from more than one aisle.
Overnight security and replenishment also shape the design over four days. We build in lockable storage for samples and order books, plan how the stand is restocked without dismantling the display, and specify finishes and fixings that survive heavy daily handling so the stand still presents well in the final afternoon when later buyers are still writing orders.
Reusing your Spring Fair stand
Spring Fair is an annual fixture and most exhibitors return, so a reusable modular stand makes sense. We store the core between editions and refresh the graphics and merchandising for each season's range, keeping your cost down. Recycled and low-waste materials are used where the design allows, and we keep your layout on file so scaling up next year starts from what already worked.
Because Spring Fair anchors the February buying calendar every year, planning the stand as a multi-year asset rather than a one-off build is usually the lower-cost decision over two or three editions — and it lets the stand evolve with your range instead of being rebuilt around it.
Next step for your Spring Fair stand
Send us your space size, hall position and goals for Spring Fair. You'll get a custom 3D concept and a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — designed to the NEC's rules, with structural sign-off built into the timeline if your design needs it. We build in-house and install at NEC Birmingham, so the stand you approve in the rendering is the stand that opens.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for retail, gift & home and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
