MCM London Comic Con Stand Builders: Designing for Footfall, Not Boardrooms
MCM London Comic Con is one of Europe's largest pop-culture events, held twice a year at ExCeL (late May and late October) and organised by ReedPop. The October show regularly draws well over 100,000 fans across three days for comics, film and TV, gaming, anime, manga and cosplay. The next autumn edition runs 23–25 October 2026.
This is a consumer show, so the stand brief is the opposite of a B2B trade fair. There are no hosted-buyer meetings to protect — the job is to stop a moving crowd, create a photo moment people share, and manage a queue safely. Gaming studios, streaming platforms, publishers and merchandise brands build activations here that behave more like sets than stands: hands-on demo pods, photo backdrops, stage areas and tall, visible branding that reads from across a packed hall.
Building at ExCeL: the rules that shape your {show} stand
ExCeL is a pillar-free hall with around 10m of clear internal height, but your stand does not get all of it. For space-only stands the working height limit at most ExCeL shows is 6m, and anything ExCeL classes as a complex structure — double-deckers, heavy suspended elements, long unsupported spans — triggers a formal sign-off you need to budget time for, not just money.
Here is how that process actually runs, and why using a builder who has done it matters. Complex designs must be submitted with engineering calculations applying a minimum factor of safety of 1.5. An independent structural engineer reviews the drawings for ExCeL and the local authority and, if satisfied, issues a Certificate of Integrity at design stage — which releases your Certificate to Build. The same engineer inspects the stand on site during build-up and issues a second Certificate of Integrity at construction stage before you can open. Miss a calculation or submit late and you do not build.
Overhead rigging is controlled tightly: all primary rigging to the ceiling is installed exclusively by ExCeL's own team — you cannot fix anything to the building yourself. Banner and lighting rigs are ordered through ExCeL's webshop and confirmed around 28 days before tenancy for the advance rate, with the organiser's permission to rig required first. Lightweight static items hang from drop wires up to 50kg; heavier loads or chain hoists are separate, costlier orders, and trim heights are standardised so no stand flies its banner higher than its neighbours.
The smaller rules catch people out too: platforms above 170mm need ramped, accessible access and a clear colour contrast at the level change; solid walls along an open gangway edge are generally not allowed; only water-based paint may be used on site; and every structure must be fully self-supporting. We design to all of this from the first sketch and submit the venue paperwork, so the build you approve is the build that opens.
What works on the MCM floor
The activations that earn their budget at MCM share a few traits: a single bold visual idea that photographs well and travels on social; hands-on interaction (play the game, try the headset, meet the character) rather than passive display; clear queue management so a popular stand doesn't block the aisle; and durable build, because three days of heavy public footfall is tougher on a stand than any trade show. Tall, well-lit branding matters — sightlines across an MCM hall are crowded at floor level, so your brand has to win above head height.
Custom build or rental for MCM?
Brand activations at MCM are almost always custom — the whole point is a distinctive, ownable experience. Smaller exhibitors and artist-alley sellers do well with fixed-price rental or shell-scheme upgrades that maximise visibility on a budget. We build both, and we design with public-safety and durability requirements front of mind, not as an afterthought.
What an MCM activation costs
Indicative turnkey pricing: a compact branded exhibitor stand or enhanced shell scheme runs roughly £3,950–£12,500; a mid-size custom activation with interaction pods, AV and a photo moment runs £12,500–£28,000; and a flagship activation with a stage, raised or double-deck elements and heavy theming runs £28,000 and up. Pricing reflects build durability, AV and ExCeL logistics.
Artist alley, exhibitor stands and brand activations — different briefs
MCM's floor spans three very different exhibitor types, and each needs a different build. Artist-alley and small-trader spaces are about fast, affordable visibility — an enhanced shell scheme with strong signage. Standard exhibitor stands (merchandise, publishers, collectibles) are retail builds optimised for selling and queue flow. Brand activations from gaming studios, streamers and studios are experiential sets built around one shareable idea. Tell us which you are and we build to that brief rather than forcing a one-size stand.
Lead capture and ROI at a consumer show
Because there are no hosted-buyer meetings at MCM, success is measured differently — reach, social shares, demos played, sign-ups captured and product sold. We design with that in mind: a clear single call to action on the stand, space for a sign-up or demo queue that doesn't block the aisle, and photogenic branding engineered for the angle a fan will actually photograph. A beautiful stand that nobody interacts with is a wasted activation; the build should make the desired action obvious.
Queue management and crowd flow on the MCM floor
MCM is one of the busiest consumer crowds at ExCeL, and the single biggest design failure here is ignoring queue and crowd flow. If your activation has a photo moment, a giveaway or a demo, it will draw a line — and an unplanned line spills into the aisle, blocks neighbours and becomes a stewarding problem. We design the queue into the footprint from the start: a defined entry and exit, a holding lane that stays on your own stand, and sightlines that let waiting visitors still see your branding rather than the back of someone's head.
Durability matters more here than at a trade show. A consumer crowd leans on counters, touches everything and moves fast for three days, so we build to take the contact — robust edges, secured graphics, and finishes that still look right on Sunday afternoon. Anything fragile or precious is either protected or kept out of arm's reach by design. Clear signage at the queue start also stops the line drifting into the aisle and keeps a waiting crowd good-humoured rather than frustrated.
Designing the activation around dwell time, not just footfall
Footfall at MCM is enormous, but footfall isn't the goal — dwell time and shareable moments are. The activations that perform give people a reason to stop and a reason to post: a set-piece backdrop, an interactive screen, a sampling or try-it station, or a photo opportunity that carries your brand into the visitor's own feed. We design one clear hero moment rather than five competing ones, because a single strong idea reads from across the hall and converts the crowd walking past into people standing on your stand.
On-site support and project management
Every stand comes with a dedicated project manager from kickoff to breakdown, and our crew is on call during show hours for graphic touch-ups, electrical issues or last-minute changes; larger stands get a dedicated on-site lead. Because we pre-build and inspect in-house before delivery to ExCeL London, the on-site install is the replication of an already-approved build rather than first-time assembly under the clock — which is what keeps your opening morning calm.
Next step for your MCM activation
Tell us your brand, your budget and the one thing you want fans to do on the stand. You'll get a 3D concept and a fixed all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — built in-house, installed at ExCeL to its rigging and public-safety rules, with a crew on site across all three show days.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for consumer & lifestyle and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
