Grand Designs Live Stand Builders: ExCeL Logistics, the Project-Ready Visitor, and What Sells
Grand Designs Live, inspired by the Channel 4 series, is one of the UK's leading consumer home, design and self-build shows, held each May at ExCeL London. Its visitors are unusually high-intent: homeowners, renovators and self-builders who arrive with a real project, a budget and a list of decisions to make on kitchens, heating, glazing, gardens and more.
That high intent shapes the brief. Unlike a casual consumer show, many visitors are ready to specify and buy, so the stand has to show your product credibly, answer detailed project questions, and capture a serious lead or book a consultation. Looking good is necessary but not enough — the stand has to support a real buying conversation.
For exhibitors that means building something closer to a showroom than a stand: a space that proves the product, answers a project-minded visitor's detailed questions, and turns genuine interest into a booked quote or consultation. The brands that win behave like specialists, not leaflet stands.
Building at ExCeL London: the rules that shape your stand
ExCeL is a pillar-free hall with around 10m of clear internal height, but your stand does not get all of it. For space-only stands the working height limit at most ExCeL shows is 6m, and anything ExCeL classes as a complex structure — double-deckers, heavy suspended elements, long unsupported spans — triggers a formal sign-off you need to budget time for, not just money.
Complex designs must be submitted with engineering calculations applying a minimum factor of safety of 1.5. An independent structural engineer reviews the drawings and, if satisfied, issues a Certificate of Structural Adequacy at design stage, which releases your Certificate to Build; the same engineer inspects the stand on site during build-up before you can open. Miss a calculation or submit late and you do not build.
Overhead rigging is controlled tightly: all primary rigging to the ceiling is installed exclusively by ExCeL's own team, ordered through ExCeL's webshop and confirmed around 28 days before tenancy for the advance rate. Lightweight static items hang from drop wires up to 50kg; heavier loads are separate, costlier orders.
The smaller rules catch people out too: platforms above 170mm need ramped, accessible access; solid walls along an open gangway edge are generally not allowed; only water-based paint may be used on site; and every structure must be fully self-supporting. We design to all of this from the first sketch and submit the venue paperwork, so the build you approve is the build that opens.
What a winning Grand Designs stand needs
The visitors here do their homework, so the stand has to stand up to scrutiny: the product shown properly — ideally a real example they can see, touch or operate — clear information on spec and price, and a credible, well-finished look that signals a serious business. We design an open frontage that invites a project conversation and a comfortable spot to have it, because these sales are rarely closed in thirty seconds.
A clear demonstration of the product solving a self-build or renovation problem does a lot of the selling, so we build the demo or sample into the stand rather than relying on a banner to describe it.
Lighting and a real, tangible product do the heavy lifting here. Self-builders and renovators trust what they can see and touch, so we light the product properly and, wherever possible, build in a real example or working sample rather than a render — a tangible demonstration answers more questions than any amount of signage.
Designing for the consultation, not the impulse buy
Because many visitors are specifying a project, the most valuable outcome is a booked consultation, a site visit or a detailed quote — not an on-the-spot impulse sale. We design a seated consultation area, a clear lead-capture step, and storage for the brochures, samples and swatches these conversations rely on, so your team can move from interest to a real next step without losing the thread.
We also plan for the project visitor's questions — somewhere to lay out plans or samples — because the stands that win here behave like a knowledgeable showroom, not a leaflet stand.
We also design for the reality that these decisions involve more than one person — couples and families deciding together — so the consultation space seats a group comfortably and the display gives everyone something to look at while the conversation happens.
What a Grand Designs Live stand costs
A turnkey stand typically runs roughly £3,950–£12,500 for a compact, well-finished build, £12,500–£28,000 for a mid-size custom build with a demo or sample area and consultation space, and £28,000 and up for a large feature build. The quote is turnkey — design, build, graphics, lighting, delivery to ExCeL, install, dismantle and the venue paperwork are all in the figure — and the amount of product display and bespoke finish moves it most.
The spend that pays back here is usually in a credible product display or working demo and a proper consultation space, because these are considered purchases — a stand that supports a real project conversation converts far better than one that just looks the part.
Getting into ExCeL: build-up timing
Grand Designs Live sits in a busy late-spring run at ExCeL, so build-up slots, rigging and power book up early and late orders attract surcharges. We confirm your space-only window, order rigging and power at the advance rate, and crate to a schedule that lands the stand inside its slot — and because the show runs over a long weekend, we plan a quick daily reset so it opens fresh each morning.
We also plan power and any water or services your demonstration needs early, ordering from ExCeL's appointed contractor at the advance rate so a live product demo isn't compromised by a late or missing connection.
Stand sizes and layouts
Stands range from compact spaces for single-product specialists up to large feature builds for established home brands. The layout question is balancing display with consultation: an open, sample-rich frontage to pull project-ready visitors in, and a quieter seated area to turn interest into a booked next step. We size and lay out the stand around your product and how much of your selling happens in a proper conversation.
Aisle position matters for a project visitor too: a corner or open frontage lets you show a larger sample or a fuller demonstration, which is often what stops a serious self-builder mid-walk.
Whatever the size, we make room for a proper conversation, because at this show the booked consultation is worth more than the extra metre of display it might replace, and a project-ready visitor remembers the supplier who sat them down over the one who handed them a leaflet.
Reusing your stand year to year
Grand Designs Live is an annual fixture for many home and self-build brands, so a modular, reusable stand is good economics. We store the core, refresh the graphics and product samples for each year, and keep your specification on file — so you arrive each May with a current, project-ready showroom rather than a rebuild.
We keep your specification and consultation layout on file, so each year is a refresh of products and samples rather than a rebuild — useful for home brands whose ranges and finishes update season to season.
Next step for your Grand Designs Live stand
Send us your space size, hall position and goals for Grand Designs Live. You'll get a custom 3D concept and a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — designed to ExCeL's rules, with structural sign-off built into the timeline if your design needs it. We build in-house and install at ExCeL London, so the stand you approve in the rendering is the stand that opens.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for interiors, design & architecture and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
