Glee Stand Builders: NEC Logistics, the Garden Buyer, and What Wins Orders
Glee is the UK's leading garden and outdoor-living retail trade show, held each September at the NEC Birmingham for more than fifty years. It brings around 400 exhibitors together with thousands of purchase-ready buyers from garden centres, farm shops, hardware stores and independent retailers, and co-locates with Autumn Fair to form one of Europe's largest home-and-garden buying trips.
This is a trade ordering show: buyers come to source ranges, discover new suppliers and place orders for the season ahead. So the brief is display plus order — present your range so a buyer grasps it from the aisle, make it easy to browse the products properly, and give your team space to sit down and write the order that makes the show pay. A great range on a stand that can't show it or seat a buyer leaves business on the table.
Because it's a seasonal buying event, clarity and merchandising matter: buyers are choosing what their customers will want next season, and the stand has to help them decide.
For a garden supplier that means a stand doing double duty: a range display that pulls buyers in and a quiet corner to write the season's order — and merchandising clear enough that a buyer can picture it on their own shelves. The exhibitors who leave with orders design for both the browse and the buy.
Building at NEC Birmingham: the rules that shape your stand
The NEC is the UK's largest exhibition venue — big, flat, pillar-free halls with generous height — which is what makes it suited to large stands and double-deckers. Space-only stands typically build to 6m, and anything the NEC classes as a complex structure (double-deck, raised platforms over a certain height, heavy suspended elements) needs structural drawings and calculations approved ahead of the show.
The NEC publishes a detailed technical e-Guide and operates appointed contractors for rigging and electrics: rigging is ordered through the venue's official rigging supplier by the published deadline, and power is ordered from the appointed electrical contractor. Order late and you pay on-site surcharges during the busiest build days. We file these the day a design is signed off.
Accessibility and fire rules apply as everywhere: raised floors need ramped edges, materials must be fire-retardant to the venue standard, and finishes are completed off-site because in-hall fabrication is limited. The NEC's scale also makes logistics the variable that decides your build week — marshalling-yard timing and hall access windows are tight in peak season, so we crate and schedule to land your stand inside its slot.
What a winning Glee stand needs
The stands that win orders do three things: they merchandise the range so a buyer grasps it from the aisle, they let people examine the products properly, and they give you somewhere to sit and write business. We design a strong product display with clear, readable range signage, an open layout that invites browsing, and a meeting or order-writing point — plus discreet storage so stock and packaging never clutter the shop front.
Because this is about next season's shelves, we design the stand to present your range the way a retailer will want to sell it — grouped, priced and easy to picture in their own store — which makes the buying decision easier and the order bigger.
Storage and restocking matter on a multi-day trade show: we build in space to keep the display full and tidy through three days, because a depleted, messy stand on day three sells far less than the one a buyer saw on day one.
Designing for a trade ordering audience
Garden buyers walk a big floor with a buying list and limited time, so the stand has to be clearly relevant and easy to do business on. We give your category and hook a bold headline so the right buyers stop, lay the range out so it's quick to assess, and keep a calm spot to talk terms — because the order conversation is where a good browse turns into a placed order. For new suppliers chasing first stockists, we make that conversation easy to start and easy to seat.
Merchandising is the persuasion here: a range shown well, with clear pricing and new-product highlights, does more to win an order than any amount of marketing copy.
What a Glee stand costs
A turnkey stand typically runs roughly £3,950–£12,500 for a compact custom build, £12,500–£28,000 for a mid-size build with strong range display and order space, and £28,000 and up for a flagship build. The quote is turnkey — design, build, graphics, flooring, lighting, delivery to the NEC, install, dismantle and the venue paperwork are all included — and the display fit-out, any working demonstration and finish quality move the number most.
Because the value is in the orders placed and the stockists won, the spend that pays back is in a stand that merchandises the range well and gives you room to write business — not in scale for its own sake.
What you don't pay extra for is in the turnkey figure — flooring, material handling and electrical — so the number you sign is the number you pay, which matters when an NEC trade stand has a lot of moving parts.
Stand sizes and layouts
Stands run from compact spaces for first-time and specialist suppliers up to large builds for established garden brands. The layout balances open, browsable range display with the order-writing space behind, so we put the product and a clear category hook where the aisle sees it and keep a calm area for the buying conversation. Open and corner positions help on a busy trade floor.
Whatever the size, we protect a spot to talk terms, because at a trade ordering show a stand that's all display and no selling space leaves the order half-written.
And because buyers visit in waves across the day, a stand that lets your team show the range and write orders in parallel converts more of that traffic than one built around a single conversation.
Getting into the NEC: build-up timing
The NEC runs to a tight marshalling-yard and hall-access schedule, and services book up early. We confirm your build-up slot, order power, rigging and any connections through the NEC's appointed contractors before the deadlines (late orders attract surcharges), and crate to a schedule that lands the stand inside its access window rather than queuing in the yard — finished and merchandised, ready for the first buyer.
Reusing your stand between editions
Garden suppliers exhibit at Glee every year and often at other trade shows too, so a modular, reusable stand is excellent value. We store the core, refresh the graphics and range display for each season, and keep your layout and contractor orders on file — so you arrive each September with a current, well-merchandised stand rather than a rebuild, and can scale as your range grows.
We also keep the range display current between editions, because Glee is about next season's products, and a stand that shows this year's range and new lines lands far better than last year's setup.
Next step for your Glee stand
Send us your space size, hall position and goals for Glee. You'll get a custom 3D concept and a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — designed to the NEC's rules, with structural sign-off built into the timeline if your design needs it. We build in-house and install at NEC Birmingham, so the stand you approve in the rendering is the stand that opens.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for retail, gift & home and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
