DSEI Stand Builders: ExCeL Logistics, a Defence Procurement Audience, and What Wins
DSEI (Defence and Security Equipment International) is one of the world's largest defence and security trade exhibitions, held biennially at ExCeL London. The 2027 edition runs 7–10 September and is expected to draw around 45,000 accredited professionals from more than 90 countries to over 1,600 exhibitors, organised into Aerospace, Land, Naval, Space, Security and international-pavilion zones.
It is unlike almost any other show in two ways. First, the audience is senior, international and strictly accredited — military delegations, government buyers and prime-contractor procurement teams — so presence and credibility matter enormously, and much of the real business happens in private. Second, the build itself is demanding: large platform displays, four show days, strict venue and security requirements, and long lead times.
So the brief is premium presence plus secure, serious meeting capacity, delivered by a builder who can handle ExCeL's structural process and the show's accreditation requirements. We design and build to exactly that.
Building at ExCeL London: the rules that shape your stand
ExCeL is a pillar-free hall with around 10m of clear internal height, but your stand does not get all of it. For space-only stands the working height limit at most ExCeL shows is 6m, and anything ExCeL classes as a complex structure — double-deckers, heavy suspended elements, long unsupported spans — triggers a formal sign-off you need to budget time for, not just money.
Complex designs must be submitted with engineering calculations applying a minimum factor of safety of 1.5. An independent structural engineer reviews the drawings and, if satisfied, issues a Certificate of Structural Adequacy at design stage, which releases your Certificate to Build; the same engineer inspects the stand on site during build-up before you can open. Miss a calculation or submit late and you do not build.
Overhead rigging is controlled tightly: all primary rigging to the ceiling is installed exclusively by ExCeL's own team, ordered through ExCeL's webshop and confirmed around 28 days before tenancy for the advance rate. Lightweight static items hang from drop wires up to 50kg; heavier loads are separate, costlier orders.
The smaller rules catch people out too: platforms above 170mm need ramped, accessible access; solid walls along an open gangway edge are generally not allowed; only water-based paint may be used on site; and every structure must be fully self-supporting. We design to all of this from the first sketch and submit the venue paperwork, so the build you approve is the build that opens.
What a winning DSEI stand needs
DSEI stands are, for the most part, about hosting high-value delegations and procurement conversations, not catching passing footfall. So the priorities are a credible, premium presence that signals a serious player, and secure, private meeting space — closed rooms and discreet briefing areas — where confidential, often delegation-level conversations can happen properly. The structural and accreditation process
DSEI combines ExCeL's standard complex-structure process with the show's own security and accreditation requirements, and both need time. For any complex or raised structure, ExCeL requires engineering calculations and independent sign-off — a Certificate of Integrity at design stage releasing your Certificate to Build, and a second inspection on site — which we prepare and manage in-house. On top of that, build crew and contractors work to the show's security and pass requirements, so we plan personnel and access well ahead.

What a DSEI stand costs
DSEI stands sit at the premium end. A turnkey stand typically runs from roughly £12,500 for a compact custom build, into the £28,000–£75,000-plus range for the flagship island and multi-room builds the show is known for — figures that reflect structural engineering, secure meeting rooms, hospitality areas, advanced AV and premium architecture. The quote is turnkey — design, build, the rigging and structural paperwork, delivery, accredited install and dismantle are all included — and structure, secure rooms and finish move the number most.
