Bett UK Stand Builders: ExCeL Logistics, Live Demos, and What Wins on the EdTech Floor
Bett UK is the world's largest education-technology show, held each January at ExCeL London and organised by Hyve. Recent editions have drawn around 37,000 visitors from more than 100 countries — teachers, school and university leaders, government and EdTech buyers — alongside everyone from start-ups to the biggest names in tech.
On a floor that scale, a tired shell scheme disappears next to the major vendors. The real brief at Bett is demonstration plus capture: a stand that shows your product working, gives visitors a reason to stop, and turns the crowd into captured leads and booked conversations rather than a stack of business cards.
For a single exhibitor that means designing for two audiences in the same footprint: the passer-by you need to stop with a visible, working demo, and the serious buyer who needs a quieter space and a reason to book a follow-up. The stands that under-perform at Bett are usually the ones that do one of those well and forget the other.
Building at ExCeL London: the rules that shape your stand
ExCeL is a pillar-free hall with around 10m of clear internal height, but your stand does not get all of it. For space-only stands the working height limit at most ExCeL shows is 6m, and anything ExCeL classes as a complex structure — double-deckers, heavy suspended elements, long unsupported spans — triggers a formal sign-off you need to budget time for, not just money.
Complex designs must be submitted with engineering calculations applying a minimum factor of safety of 1.5. An independent structural engineer reviews the drawings and, if satisfied, issues a Certificate of Structural Adequacy at design stage, which releases your Certificate to Build; the same engineer inspects the stand on site during build-up before you can open. Miss a calculation or submit late and you do not build.
Overhead rigging is controlled tightly: all primary rigging to the ceiling is installed exclusively by ExCeL's own team, ordered through ExCeL's webshop and confirmed around 28 days before tenancy for the advance rate. Lightweight static items hang from drop wires up to 50kg; heavier loads are separate, costlier orders.
The smaller rules catch people out too: platforms above 170mm need ramped, accessible access; solid walls along an open gangway edge are generally not allowed; only water-based paint may be used on site; and every structure must be fully self-supporting. We design to all of this from the first sketch and submit the venue paperwork, so the build you approve is the build that opens.
What a winning Bett stand needs
The strongest Bett stands lead with a live demonstration, not a logo. That means screens and demo stations positioned so a passer-by can see the product in use, a clear one-line statement of what you do and who it's for, structured lead capture built into the flow, and somewhere quieter to take a serious buyer aside. We design those zones first, because they decide where power, screens and seating have to sit.
Practical detail decides whether the demo lands. ExCeL halls are bright and loud, so we mount screens at a height and angle that beats glare and over-shoulder viewing, plan audio so a demo is audible without bleeding into the next conversation, and give queueing visitors somewhere to stand that doesn't block the aisle. A demo nobody can see or hear is just an expensive screen.
Designing for educators and government buyers
Bett's audience is time-poor and evidence-driven. Educators and government buyers scan for relevance and proof in seconds, so the back wall has to say what segment you serve and what outcome you deliver, not just your brand name. We build in space for demos and hosted conversations, and where you need confidentiality — procurement or framework discussions — a semi-private area that still reads as open and approachable.
It pays to design for dwell, not just attention. Educators often want to try a product properly rather than watch a 20-second loop, so we build in standing demo points for quick looks and a small number of seated positions for the longer, higher-value conversations — and keep the messaging jargon-light, because the decision-makers here are not always the most technical people in the room.
What a Bett stand costs
A turnkey Bett stand typically runs roughly £3,950–£12,500 for an enhanced shell scheme or compact custom build, £12,500–£28,000 for a mid-size custom build with bespoke design, AV and a meeting area, and £28,000 and up for a flagship, double-deck or large island presence. AV count and bespoke architecture are usually what move the number.
Turnkey means the figure already covers design, graphics, AV mounting, lighting, delivery to ExCeL, install, dismantle and the rigging and electrical paperwork. What moves the number is the AV count, the amount of bespoke joinery and whether you go to a raised or double-deck structure for extra meeting space above the floor.
Stand sizes and layouts at Bett
Bett exhibitors range from compact stands for first-time EdTech vendors up to large island builds for the established platforms. For a single brand the layout question is about balancing demo visibility with meeting capacity — an open-front island pulls traffic, while a part-enclosed layout protects scheduled conversations. We recommend a size and layout based on your hall position, your demo needs and how much of your value is in private conversations versus public visibility.
Corner and island positions are worth designing for specifically. Open sides massively increase the number of aisles your demo is visible from, so where your space allows it we orient the key screen and entry point to the busiest routes rather than treating all four edges the same.
Getting into ExCeL: build-up timing for a January show
Bett lands in a busy January window at ExCeL, so material-handling slots, rigging crews and the electrical contractor book up early and on-site surcharges climb for late orders. We confirm your space-only build-up window, book rigging at the advance rate (around 28 days out), coordinate power with the appointed contractor, and crate to a schedule that lands your stand inside its slot.
Capturing and following up the leads you generate
A busy Bett stand can generate more conversations than a team remembers, so lead capture has to be built into the flow, not bolted on. We design in badge-scanning or tablet capture at the demo and meeting points, a logical path from ‘stopped to watch’ to ‘booked a follow-up’, and signage that sets up the next step. The goal is to leave the show with qualified, attributed leads, not a pile of cards nobody can place.
Reusing your Bett stand between editions
Most Bett exhibitors return every January, so a reusable stand pays off. We build on a modular core, store it between editions and refresh the graphics and demo configuration for each year's product, keeping your cost down and the stand current. Recycled and low-waste materials are used where the design allows, which also supports the sustainability reporting larger EdTech and education buyers increasingly expect.
We also keep your structural sign-off and rigging orders on file, so a returning double-deck or complex stand doesn't restart the approvals process from scratch each January.
Next step for your Bett UK stand
Send us your space size, hall position and goals for Bett UK. You'll get a custom 3D concept and a fixed, all-inclusive quote within 48 hours — designed to ExCeL's rules, with structural sign-off built into the timeline if your design needs it. We build in-house and install at ExCeL London, so the stand you approve in the rendering is the stand that opens.
We also design and build exhibition stands for other major UK shows — see the full show calendar for technology, data & digital and beyond, all with the same in-house team, fixed all-in pricing and full venue paperwork.
